Advanced Air Quality Decision Support System Launched for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, India

Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad are taking an important step: from air quality monitoring to air quality management.
At the CII Cleaner Air Forum, the Cleaner Air - Better Life initiative, together with Pune Municipal Corporation, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, IITM Pune, and Airvoice, launched an advanced Decision Support System for the twin cities.
For Airvoice, this is more than a product milestone.
For now the system provides hourly air quality forecasts up to 72 hours ahead, at 1 km resolution, built on local emissions data, detailed meteorology, and atmospheric modelling.
But the real point is not the forecast itself. The real point is what cities can do with it. A city should not only know that the air is bad (or good), it should understand:
• where pollution is likely to appear;
• why it is happening;
• which areas will be affected;
• which interventions make sense;
• and when to act — before the episode becomes visible to everyone.
This is the shift that matters. From reporting to anticipation. From general city-level averages to neighbourhood-level insight. From isolated measures to data-driven action plans. From “what happened?” to “what should we do next?”
India already has the ambition, the national policy framework, and a growing clean air movement. What many cities now need is an operational layer that helps translate plans into day-to-day decisions.
This is exactly where we see the next stage of our work with CII / CABL:
• test the system on the ground in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad;
• connect forecasts and source analysis to specific city actions;
• build a practical playbook for municipal teams;
• measure what works;
• then scale this approach to other Indian cities.
A dedicated workshop with all stakeholders is already in the works, to walk through early results and make sure everyone gets the most out of the system.
Clean air will not be achieved by data alone, it requires institutions, science, technology, local expertise, industry participation, and city authorities willing to act.
That is why this partnership matters.
Grateful to CII Cleaner Air - Better Life, IITM Pune, Pune Municipal Corporation, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, and our Airvoice India and global teams. The science is now becoming operational. And this is where the real work begins.
